Palma will host up to 27 shows of various formats in just 4 days
The Director General of Culture of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Pedro Vidal, and the Director of the Balearic Studies Institute, Llorenç Perelló, presented today the program of the eighth edition of Fira B! Professional Market of Music and Performing Arts of the Balearic Islands. The presentation was also attended by the Director of Culture of the Island, Guillem Ginard, representing the Council of Mallorca, which is the main collaborator of Fira B! along with the City of Palma, Teatre Principal de Palma, Balearic Youth Institute (IBJOVE), and Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art in Palma.
The most important professional market for music and performing arts in the Balearic Islands, Fira B!, separates the disciplines of music and performing arts for the first time this year. Thus, the performing arts program will take place on October 9, 10, 11, and 12, and the music program will be from November 2 to 5.
This year's performing arts program features a total of 27 shows, including theater, circus, dance, new formats, and street performances. The guest country for this eighth edition is Chile, with the presence of 2 Chilean companies in the lineup: Cia. Interdram and Cia. La Re-Sentida.
"The government is organizing two events (each lasting 4 days) dedicated to culture for all citizens and arts professionals. Today, we are presenting Fira B! Performing Arts, an edition with shows to showcase and promote the creations of artists from the Balearic Islands, along with works from Chile, the Canary Islands, Valencia, and Catalonia," said Perelló.
The opening ceremony will be on Monday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Teatre Principal with the performance of "La Posibilidad de la ternura" by the Chilean company La Re-Sentida (Marco Layera / Carolina Maza). This marks the Spanish premiere of a work that reflects on masculinity from the perspective of young adolescents. After its premiere in Spain at Fira B!, the play will be performed in Madrid and Barcelona. On the same day, at 9:00 p.m. also at the Teatre Principal, "Les preposicions," a work by playwright Aina de Cos, a co-production of Teatre Principal and El Somni Produccions, will be staged.
The closing of Fira B! Performing Arts will be on Thursday, October 12, at the Teatre Principal. At 8:00 p.m., Aurora Bauzà and Pere Jou will perform "A beginning_Expanded Version," a piece that won the IEB 2022 creation grants, co-produced by L'Auditori de Barcelona, the Centre Coregraphique National d'Orleans (France), and the Teatre Principal de Palma.
To make the most of the fair, the shows have been distributed across different days, taking into account the disciplines. Thus, the first two days - October 9 and 10 - will focus mainly on text-based theater and new languages. Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12, will be dedicated to movement, dance, circus, street theater, and visual theater.
You can now check the complete program at http://www.firab.org/ca/. The pieces included in the program were selected from the 300 proposals submitted through the open call earlier this year. The expert committee that selected the proposals consisted of:
- Joan Negrié, director of FITT (International Theater Festival of Tarragona) and Sala Trono.
- Catalina Caldentey, president of ATAPIB - Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands.
- Maria Novell, Culture Technician, Formentera Island Council.
- Joan Matamales, director of the Teatre d'Artà and member of ATAPIB (Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands).
- Pere Cortada, Teatre de Capdepera, and member of ATAPIB (Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands).
- Teresa Carranza, Coordinator of the Creation Area of the Ramon Llull Institute.
- Clara Matas Vidal, cultural manager specialized in Performing Arts and Deputy Executive Director of the FiM festival in Vila-seca.
Perelló highlighted Fira B!'s participation in the Apropa Cultura program and its commitment to reinforcing the role of women in culture. "In performing arts, the presence of women is close to 60%, with some proposals formed entirely by women," he said.
Fira B! combines programming and Professional Days, activities aimed at the professional sector, which will take place at the Mar i Terra Theater. Registration for the professional days of Fira B! Performing Arts is open and can be done through https://pro.firab.org/firab/en/info.
"The Professional Days reflect the government's commitment to the projection of the cultural sector in the Balearic Islands. They will allow the entire artistic community of the islands to present their projects to local and foreign programmers and professionals, as well as establish synergies and collaborations with other artists through various actions, such as Text and Movement Tasting at the Mar Theater, where we can see emerging and innovative projects, and the round table 'Artist Status,' with the presence of Carmen Paez, Director General of Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property, and Cooperation at the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Government of Spain, among others," Perelló stated.
Among these activities aimed at a professional audience, the presence of Dramatists and Playwrights Associations from all over Spain stands out, as well as the Trànsit Days, with Illescena, AVETID, Xarxa Alcover; the Mediterranean Dance and Movement Network; and Impuls a la Dansa, with Dansa València – Institut Valencià de la Cultura, among others.
Fira B! will always take place in iconic venues and stages in the city of Palma, adding extra interest for attendees from outside the islands. The venues for the 2023 edition will include the municipal theaters Mar i Terra and Xesc Forteza, the Teatre Principal de Palma, the Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art, Espai el Tub, Plaça Major, Plaça Miquel Maura (in front of Teatre Xesc Forteza), and the Rambla (outside Teatre Principal de Palma).
Fira B! 2023 will host numerous exchanges. On a national level, there will be the Canarian Focus through the Canarios Dentro y Fuera Festival, which includes the company of Daniel Abreu (with two members who have received the National Dance Award). On the other hand, there is the Valencian company Jacob Gómez, through DansaValència. Internationally, there will be two Chilean companies (Interdram and La Re-Sentida). Additionally, for the past 9 years, Fira B! has been a member of COFAE, the Coordinating.
